Substantivos (nouns) in Portuguese

Today we are gonna learn about nouns in Portuguese (their definition) and in future posts we will discuss about their types.


Before talking about nouns in Portuguese, let’s define first what is a noun.

What is a noun?

Nouns are words used to name things (people, cities, animals, feelings, countries, weather, and so on). Some examples of nouns in Portuguese are:

  • cadeira (chair);
  • computador (computer);
  • tristeza (sadness);
  • calendário (calendar);
  • caneta (pen);
  • papel (paper);
  • casa (house);
  • felicidade (happiness);
  • copo (glass);
  • cachorro or cão (dog);
  • gato (cat);
  • França (France);
  • água (water);
  • ar (air);
  • amor (love);
  • microfone (microphone);
  • cor (color).

In Portuguese, nouns can be “masculinos” (male) or “femininos” (female), and the article that must be used changes accordingly. Please read the post about articles in Portuguese for more info. See some examples:

  • o amor (the love);
  • a garrafa (the bottle);
  • as cores (the colors);
  • os lugares (the places);

The word used to describe “noun” in Portuguese is substantivo, caso it’s in singular form, or substantivos, case it’s in plural form.
